Martin Scorsese’s bloody, neon tour of vice and Mafia crime in Sin City is a good-not-great successor to Goodfellas, which reunites back Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci with a script co-written by Nicholas Pileggi. The mid-budget drama ($40 - $50 million) is the kind of studio film that major studios don’t make anymore, the ones packed with ensemble casts bolstering the likes of Sharon Stone and Don Rickles. It’s crazy to think that Joe Pesci was this close to not being in Martin Scorsese’s critically acclaimed movie The Irishman. Thankfully though, his persistent movie partner in crime Robert De Niro was able to convince him to be involved in the project. As a result, Joe now has a 2020 Golden Globe nomination to boast about for his portrayal of real-life mobster Russell Bufalino.
Apparently, Joe said no to being in the film around 40 times, according to what Robert told Entertainment Weekly. The Netflix project marked the first flick for Joe in nearly 10 years; he hasn’t regularly been in films since the 1990s.
“A lot of what I was saying [to Joe] was, ‘Come on, who knows if we’re ever going to have this chance again?’” Robert revealed to the outlet. “[I said] ’Let’s just do it.’ And he loves Marty [Scorsese] and greatly respects him and knows that if he’s in Marty’s hands, it’s going to be okay.” Md live virtual online casino.Grace Hightower
Why Joe was so hesitant to join remains a mystery, but Martin has some theories.
“These are individual choices and sometimes people don’t want to do something for different reasons,” Martin said. “It could be, financial issues. You could have that — I’m not saying he did, right? It could be family issues. It could be health. It could be boredom from doing a certain kind of film. Playing a certain character. Ultimately, if Bob asks enough and he pushes enough, does this makes sense? Turns out, it took years (yes, years) of persuading to get Joe to agree. “Casino had Sharon Stone, Jimmy Woods, and Don Rickles, and it was the last time that … Joe and I did a picture with Marty. But, hopefully that is gonna change, Joe,” Robert said addressing his friend. “Marty and I are planning to get back together for a movie I think will be a future ‘Guy Hall of Fame’ entry, that is if Joe has any more f--ks left in him. So far all he keeps saying is ‘Go f--k yourself.’”

In the end, Joe finally said ’yes’ after Netflix decided to finance the film. Looking back, Martin knew Robert was the right person to lure Joe into the project. ’Bob and Joe, they have their own language,’ the famous director told EW.

Though The Irishman is the first time the two have worked together on a film in 13 years, it’s clear that they’re friends offscreen. Back in 2003, Joe saluted his pal in a speech for Robert’s American Film Institute Life Achievement Award.
’I owe Mr. De Niro a lot, probably a lot more than most people. He was very, very generous,’ he explained while sharing a funny story about filming Goodfellas with Robert.
Joe’s story went:’I was stabbing Frank Vincent in the trunk .. and in between takes I was breathing very heavily and couldn’t wait to get back in and do it again, and uh, Bob kept looking at me, I felt this presence staring at me. And I looked at him and I said [breathing heavily], ’What’s the matter?’ and he said, ’Nothing, nothing.’ I said, ’If you don’t tell me what it is, I’m going to stab you with the knife.’ And he said, ’I think you’re going too fast with the knife.’ He said, ’You could never get it in and out of the ribs that quickly.’
In 2019, Robert revealed to Seth Meyershow he helped jumpstart Joe’s career with Raging Bull.
’He was living in a treehouse,’ he joked. ’He was living above a restaurant in the Bronx that he worked in for Raging Bull .. I saw him in a movie called the Death Collector, and I go, ’Marty, you’ve got to see this guy,’ and blah, blah, blah .. I think I met him first with the casting director, then we all went up to have dinner at the restaurant and Marty met him .. and slowly, he was the one to play my brother.’SETTINGSHQLO
Over the years, the actors have become legends in their own right. Joe won an Oscar in 1991 for his role in Goodfellas, has been nominated for three Golden Globes, and earned one BAFTA for Raging Bull. Well, first it would be hugely intimidating, as those movie legends have all left such a profound mark on cinema over the last 50 years. But mostly, it would be enlightening and utterly delightful, as evidenced by the 20-minute roundtable with all four men in the newly released The Irishman featurette from the Criterion Collection.The Irishman Featurette: The Actors
Originally recorded in 2019, the roundtable conversation between The Irishman director Scorsese and actors Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci was newly edited for the Criterion Collection Blu-ray release of the film. But you can watch the entire 20-minute conversation on YouTube, thanks to Netflix, which released the entire roundtable online.
Just as Scorsese got the spotlight with last week’s special features release, De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci take the stage in the roundtable featurette, which unfolds like a bunch of old friends sitting down over drinks. And old friends all of them are — with the foursome speaking about their relationships, both personal and professional, stemming back to the ’60s New York City movie scene, and bemoan the fact that it took Scorsese so long to work with Pesci again. It’s a wonderful, illuminating discussion between all four movie titans, and one that is part of the special features on the Criterion Collection release of The Irishman, which Netflix appears to be eager to share to its audience who aren’t willing to fork over money for the special Blu-ray release.
